What is AI readiness?

The short version

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity about your business, the answer comes from what those systems could read on your website. AI readiness is how well your site serves those readers.

Why this matters now

Search behavior is shifting. Instead of typing keywords into Google and clicking through ten blue links, people increasingly ask an AI a direct question and trust the answer. If your business isn't legible to those systems, you don't exist in that channel — no matter how good your SEO is.

Traditional SEO optimized for a crawler that indexes pages and ranks them. AI systems do something different: they read, summarize, and answer. A page that ranks #1 on Google can still be invisible to ChatGPT if its key facts are buried in images, JavaScript, or blocked crawlers.

How AI systems read your site

It happens in three stages:

  • Crawl. The AI bots fetch your pages — if your site lets them in.
  • Parse. The system extracts structure: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, and structured data. Clean semantic HTML parses well; text baked into images doesn't parse at all.
  • Cite. When answering, the model draws on sources it trusts and can quote accurately. Clear, factual pages get cited. Vague marketing copy gets skipped.

The six things that matter

1. Crawler access. A small settings file on your site is the front door. Many sites block AI crawlers without knowing it — one wrong setting is enough.

2. Page structure. One clear H1, descriptive headings, real paragraphs. AI summarizes structure; a wall of divs with no hierarchy summarizes badly.

3. Metadata and structured data. Titles, descriptions, and structured data tell machines exactly what a page is about — no guessing required.

4. Content clarity. State facts plainly: what you do, where, for whom, how much. The sentence "We do X" beats three paragraphs of brand voice.

5. FAQ signals. Question-and-answer content maps directly onto how people prompt AI. An FAQ page is pre-formatted answers.

6. Performance. Slow or error-prone pages get crawled less and trusted less.

What "not ready" looks like

Ask an AI about your business. If it hedges, hallucinates your services, cites a competitor, or says it can't find information — that's the symptom. The cause is almost always one of the six items above, and it's usually fixable in an afternoon.

What to do about it

Start with a scan. CrawlReady checks all six dimensions and hands you a ranked fix list — the highest-impact items first, with exact instructions. One token, one full scan.
